Frequently Asked Questions
We understand you may have questions. Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most common inquiries about Chiropractic Orthopedics. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for any other concerns.
What's the difference between a chiropractor and a chiropractic orthopedist?
Chiropractors receive four years of specialized training. Chiropractic Orthopedists have an extra year of advanced training beyond the typical chiropractic degree, focusing on the non-surgical treatment of spine and joint problems.
What types of conditions do chiropractic orthopedists treat?
Chiropractic Orthopedists have a deep understanding of the mechanics of the human body, how we injure ourselves and the means and methods required to heal. We treat all orthopedic conditions.
Why would I want to see Dr. Hargis when I have been everywhere and done everything and am still no better?
Many factors contribute to chronic pain, yet traditional medical approaches often overlook important aspects.
- How often does your doctor inquire about your sleep position, daily exercise routine, commuting habits, or workplace ergonomics?
- Do you prop yourself up with pillows while watching TV or reading in bed?
- Are you sure the stretches you’re doing are truly beneficial?
- Is that massage therapy truly the most effective approach for your condition?
- Can your doctor accurately differentiate between a muscle strain and a spasm through physical examination alone?
At Warwick Brain & Spine Therapy, we take a holistic approach. We understand that chronic pain is complex and influenced by numerous factors. Through years of experience working with thousands of patients, we’ve observed that many commonly recommended treatments and lifestyle habits can inadvertently prolong or even worsen pain.
Our approach emphasizes a deep understanding of each patient’s unique circumstances. We carefully consider their daily habits, postures, and routines to identify potential contributing factors to their pain. This personalized approach has enabled us to achieve significant improvements in the well-being of our patients within a short timeframe.
We believe that true healing requires a comprehensive understanding of the patient and their condition. Our extensive experience allows us to identify and address the root causes of pain effectively, leading to faster and more lasting results.
Spinal pain as an ongoing problem.
Spinal pain is a complex issue. The spine, with its intricate structure – including 24 moveable vertebrae, a three-part pelvis, two legs (potentially of different lengths), a 12-pound head, and numerous discs, joints, ligaments, and nerves – is a sophisticated and dynamic system.
Successful spinal care requires a deep understanding of biomechanics. It’s not just about alleviating pain; it’s about optimizing spinal function to prevent degeneration and ensure long-term well-being. This involves identifying and addressing the root causes of pain, which may involve complex biomechanical imbalances.
Unfortunately, few healthcare providers possess the specialized knowledge and skills necessary to fully understand the intricacies of the spine and develop effective, long-term treatment strategies.
What techniques and therapies do you employ?
Diagnostic Approach:
- We utilize a comprehensive diagnostic approach, including standard medical tests as indicated.
- We prefer weight-bearing MRIs of the spine as they provide more accurate information about spinal pathology compared to traditional MRIs.
- We also utilize weight-bearing or standing x-rays to assess how spinal alignment and function are affected by weight and daily activities.
Treatment Approach:
-
Our treatment plans are customized to each individual patient.
-
We employ a variety of therapeutic modalities, including:
- Casting and bracing
- Custom rehabilitation and exercise programs
- Healing therapies such as ultrasound
- Custom-made podiatric orthotics and braces (many designed by Dr. Hargis)
- Ergonomic evaluations and plans
-
Spinal manipulation may be used in appropriate cases. However, it is not always recommended and is carefully considered for each individual patient.
Our goal is to provide comprehensive and effective care that addresses the root causes of spinal pain and promotes long-term spinal health.
Are the changes permanent? How long does it usually take to see positive changes?
Positive results are often observed within the first twenty visits, and the majority of individuals experience lasting improvements.
What does therapy consist of?
Our therapy begins with a comprehensive QEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalography).
The collected data is then analyzed using a vast database of normative studies to identify any imbalances in brainwave patterns.
During therapy sessions, you watch a movie or cartoon of your choice. Two small sensors placed on your head monitor your brainwave activity in real-time. The movie playback is dynamically adjusted based on your brainwave patterns. If your brain produces the desired brainwave patterns, the movie continues smoothly.
This process helps your brain learn to produce healthier brainwave patterns.
To ensure ongoing progress, we re-evaluate your brainwave activity every ten sessions and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.
Do you treat all ages? Do you treat other conditions outside the spine?
The spine plays a vital role in overall health. Nerves originating from your spine connect and control every organ and tissue in your body. While many medical professionals may primarily focus on medication, the impact of spinal health on overall well-being is significant.
Chiropractic care addresses the intricate relationship between the spine and the body’s overall function.
- For infants: Gentle adjustments can address spinal misalignments that may occur during birth, potentially alleviating conditions like colic and wryneck.
- For children: Chiropractic care may be beneficial for conditions such as chronic ear infections, asthma, and headaches, which may have underlying spinal connections.
- For seniors: Chiropractic care can improve flexibility, balance, and overall well-being, potentially reducing the risk of falls and enhancing quality of life. Many Medicare plans cover chiropractic care.
Chiropractic adjustments are tailored to each individual’s needs and performed with gentle, precise techniques.
By addressing spinal health, chiropractic care can contribute to improved overall health and well-being across all age groups
